Your Quality Solutions, Inc. (YQS), successfully built an Underground Retention Basin using the Terre Arch TA26 manufactured by Terre Hill Concrete Products. This project, located near Pottstown, is a part of the 120-mile Schuylkill River Trail. When finished, this trail will extend from Frackville in Schuylkill County to Philadelphia. YQS was under contract with Allan Myers for the construction of this basin. This project was bid and contracted through PennDOT.
There were 140 precast arches, and 14 access manifolds incorporated into this design. The Terre Arches are designed to handle H-20 traffic loading with shallow cover placed over the precast components. Full access for inspection and maintenance is provided through the unique Terre Arch design incorporating the access manifolds, thereby permitting a visual inspection of the entire basin with no restriction.
The unique challenge on this project involved working under the live 220 KV power lines, originating at the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant and feeding electricity to the City of Philadelphia, that ran directly over the underground basin with a 50′ clearance. Extraordinary precautions were taken to assure safety to the installation crew and to maintain continuous electrical flow through the lines during the installation process.
